MEDIUM · 150 WORDS

Cassandre Beaugrand is a French triathlete, Olympic Champion (Paris 2024) and World Champion (Torremolinos 2024). She was born on 23 May 1997 in Livry-Gargan, a suburb of Paris, into a family of athletes — a middle-distance runner mother and an athletics-coach father. She began running at six and took up triathlon at seven. A double junior national cross-country champion (2013, 2014) and 1,500m gold medallist at the 2013 European Youth Olympic Festival, she converted to triathlon and won her first World Triathlon Series gold in Hamburg in 2018. After a Tokyo 2020 mixed-relay bronze, she relocated to Loughborough University in 2022 to train under coach Gavin Smith — and eighteen months later won Olympic gold on the Pont Alexandre III. In early 2025 she relocated to Girona, Spain.

LONG · 401 WORDS

Cassandre Beaugrand is one of the defining triathletes of her generation: Olympic Champion (Paris 2024) and Individual World Champion (2024) — and the first French triathlete in history to win an individual Olympic medal. She was born on 23 May 1997 in Livry-Gargan, a town in the northeast suburbs of Paris. Her mother, Laure Guillevin, was a middle-distance runner. Her father, Ludovic, was a coach at Livry-Gargan Athlétisme. She started running at six, took up triathlon at seven, and from 2006 to 2011 raced for her hometown club. From 2011 onwards she has been trained, in part, by her father. Before triathlon claimed her she was already a track and cross-country talent: twice the French junior national cross-country champion (2013, 2014) and 1,500m gold medallist at the 2013 European Youth Olympic Festival. After converting to triathlon she landed her first World Triathlon Series victory in Hamburg in 2018. Tokyo 2020, run in 2021, was a bittersweet chapter — a DNF in the individual race and a bronze in the mixed team relay. Two years before Paris she relocated to Loughborough University in the UK to train under high-performance coach Gavin Smith. On 31 July 2024, in front of crowds along the Seine, she swam through the river, raced across the rain-slicked cobblestones around the Champs-Élysées, and crossed the line on Pont Alexandre III in 1:54:55 — Olympic gold, on home soil. Less than three months later she added the World Championship title in Torremolinos, recovering from forty-eighth place after a swim navigational error to win in 1:56:44. In doing so she joined Flora Duffy as only the second woman ever to win Olympic gold and a World title in the same year. She has continued to break records on the road: in February 2025 she ran 14:53 over 5K at the Monaco Run, a French national road record. In early 2025 she relocated her training base from Loughborough to Girona, Spain, joining a group led by coach Glenn Poleunis. Next on the horizon: Los Angeles 2028 — and, she has said publicly, the long-distance ranks beyond.
